What's a body? - ArtCoDe @ Dutch Design Week

Fontys Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Zwijsenplein 1, 5038 TZ Tilburg

Live performances about technology and the human body.

Every new achievement in digital communication changes how we experience our bodies. ‘We no longer feel the same, nor do our eyes and ears and other senses remain the same’, said Canadian media theorist Marshall McLuhan. By communicating through technology we change — something we experience every day during this pandemic. Suddenly we are mere heads in virtual rooms where we talk, discuss, ask questions, perform, listen, or do nothing at all.

How does the massive use of digital communication break us away from our bodies? In which ways can we communicate with our bodies over long distances? To what extent do we even understand the concept of disembodiment?

How can we prepare ourselves for a future with brain-implant based communication? A future with robots and androids as loyal companions for your grandparents. A future with designer babies and without death. A future where people who never make mistakes, never forget, and are perfect in dealing with their emotions.

For six weeks, students from Fontys ARTCODE explore the future relationship between technology and the body. During Dutch Design Week, they livestream their results every day from 14:00 to 16:00.
